Club du Choro de Montréal

Club du Choro de Montréal

The “Club du Choro de Montréal” is a collective of musicians who wants to keep the tradition of this kind of Brazilian music that dates back to the nineteenth century. Choro is a Brazilian urban musical genre born in the late nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro. At that time, the choro (as well as other manifestations of popular music in the world) developed from the performance of fashionable European musical genres, such as waltz, mazurca, polka and schottische played in the Brazilian (or Afro-Brazilian) way. Legends such as Chiquinha Gonzaga, Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, Anacleto de Medeiros, Jacob do Bandolim and Waldir Azevedo are great references of the genre, just to name a few. In general, the basic instruments are: the cavaquinho, the pandeiro, the mandolin, the flute, the clarinet, the 7-string guitar and the 6-string guitar.
The aim of the collective is to promote concerts and “rodas de choro”, where the musicians of any instrument will be welcome to this Brazilian celebration of culture and life.
